The news on the street is that headphone makers at Final Audio have developed their own Planar Magnetic headphone dubbed the D8000 due for release any day now. This all new open-back headphone is rumored to have an all new approach to the standard planar magnetic design. Some of the MajorHiFi staff even managed to get a rare glimpse and listen to the Final Audio D8000 planar magnetic headphone and here is what we know so far.
Improved Planar Magnetic Design
The Spiral Coil
Traditionally, most planar magnetic headphones use a “zigzag” pattern coil in combination with a series of column shaped magnets.
When making the D8000 however Final Audio used a corrugated “spiral coil” in order to significantly improve the bass response over the traditional planar magnetic headphone design.
Ultra Thin Film
The other breakthrough in planar magnetic design with the Final Audio D8000 is the “thin air film” also used in condenser microphones mixed with a perforated mesh metal. The result is the process called the “Air Film Dampening System”.
This technology in combination with the “spiral coil” created a unique sound signature that results in better bass response.
The other noteworthy feature in the Final Audio D8000 is the well crafted, sturdy design. In typical Final Audio fashion, the headband has the iconic stainless steel frame but it’s the open-back grill that’s the real eye catcher. In addition, MajorHiFi staff reported the circular over-ear fit of this headphone is incredibly comfortable. The only criticism in-fact is that the earpads might be a little too big for some listeners. The sound however was reported to be “very accurate with very nice bass response”.
The Final Audio D8000 planar magnetic open-back headphone is set for a slightly delayed release in just a matter of weeks if not days.
