JH Audio 16V2 Pro Universal Performance In Ear Monitor Review

Listening to a couple of JH Audio’s IEM’s, I feel totally spoiled. How can you go back to anything else? (Campfire excluded). The JH Audio 16 V2 Pro Universal is not the most balanced JH Audio IEM out there, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s a matter of taste. So, does it’s personality suit your desires? Let’s find out in this JH Audio 16V2 Pro Universal Performance In Ear Monitor Review.

FIT – JH Audio 16V2 Pro Universal Performance In Ear Monitor Review

Foam or silicone, these tips fit easily and isolate from ambient noise. In fact the noise isolation reaches 26db, which is important if you’re a musician and not already deaf. The earphones themselves are a little bulky looking, but rest assured, they’re as light as a feather. The 16V2 also has a nice thick memory wire that’s easy to hook around the ear.

DESIGN and FEATURES – JH Audio 16V2 Pro Universal Performance In Ear Monitor Review

Ok, what have we got here? 10 drivers: quad low, dual mid, quad high. It’s also got the Triple Bore with FreqPhase Steel Tube Waveguide. It’s frequen cool. Basically it corrects time and phase of the multiple drivers so they all match perfectly. Each driver signal arrives within 0.01 milliseconds. This technology is patented by Jerry Harvey Audio.

The cable has a 4-pin connection with an aluminum locking collar. The input connector is T-shaped, gold-plated and 3.5mm. The neatest feature about the JH 16V2 (as well as other JH Audio models) is its variable bass output, which is adjustable from the cable. They give you a cutesy putesy little screwdriver to adapt the bass to your specific needs. If you’re a drummer, for example, you might want to hear the lower frequencies over the high. If you’re an audiophile, then you can screw away to your heart’s content.

SOUND – JH Audio 16V2 Pro Universal Performance In Ear Monitor Review

Fast, transparent and super punchy (drums sound awesome!) with a beautiful high extension and killer bass. What’s not to like? Let’s see the breakdown.

Lows

How low do you want to go? Bass-heads, you’ll be pleased. These babies can get super bassy. Listening to pop, hip-hop and EDM while cranking up the bass is splendid, but you lose the mids and highs just a bit. It’s fatter than a beached whale. Turn it down a little and you get a bass with less oomf but with a tad more clarity. For musicians of all instruments, this adjustable bass function is ideal.

Mids

The mids are less emphasized than the lows and highs. Listening to rock choruses, I felt a little hollowness. So, the warmth is missing when you compare it to a model like the Roxanne. The midrange is a must have for me, so this was a deal breaker. Certainly, if you listen to a lot of rock or if you prefer a really evenly balanced headphone, maybe you should move on.

Highs

The 16V2 has nice extended highs. The separation and clarity in this range is crazy. Listening to classical, the distinction between the woodwinds, strings and choir was impressive. I also listened to some John Coltrane. The saxophone was detailed and breathy and the pianos were emotive. It’s hard to find a headphone that has clear highs without a hint of abrasiveness (especially at higher volumes), but the 16V2 pulls it off gracefully. For sure, the high range is the highlight of the 16V2.

Soundstage

I liked the soundstage on this for sure. It’s got definite breadth, which became really clear after listening to some classical recordings. Instrument placement is spot on.

SUMMARY – JH Audio 16V2 Pro Universal Performance In Ear Monitor Review

If you’re not particularly a mid range lover, or even balance isn’t important to you, then 16V2 will be perfect. But if you’re big into rock, you might want to go for something a little less scooped out. Everything else about these headphones are flawless.
