Bowers & Wilkins PX8 S2 vs PX8: Which Luxury Headphone Reigns Supreme?

Bowers & Wilkins has built a reputation for luxurious design and audiophile-grade sound in the wireless headphone space. The original PX8 set a new benchmark for the brand when it debuted, while the newer PX8 S2 represents a stylish and refined upgrade. If you’re wondering whether to stick with the PX8 or invest in the S2, this review compares the two flagships across build, features, and sound quality.

Look & Feel

The PX8 S2 introduces subtle but important refinements over the original. Its earcups are slightly lighter, and smoother transitions across the frame make it feel more polished. The use of Nappa leather and premium aluminum continues B&W’s design tradition, while the improved ergonomics provide better comfort over long sessions. The original PX8 is no less premium, with high-grade leather and a sturdy metal frame that gives it an unmistakably high-end presence. Comfort is strong, but the S2’s refinements improve weight distribution and make it easier to wear for extended listening.

Design & Functionality

Both the PX8 and PX8 S2 use the same 40mm carbon cone drivers, but the PX8 S2 offers a louder output with more room to adjust. In terms of noise-canceling, the PX8 S2 has been improved over the original PX8. While it still doesn’t reach the class-leading performance of Sony or Bose, the S2 provides a more effective buffer against ambient noise, especially in mid-range frequencies like office chatter. The PX8 remains strong in this area, but the S2 offers a noticeable refinement for frequent travelers. You get most of the same features when you download B&W’s companion app, but the adjustable wear sensor on the PX8 S2 gives it a leg up for me.

Bluetooth

The PX8 S2 benefits from Bluetooth 5.3 and a wide range of codec support, including aptX Lossless, Adaptive, HD, and Classic, which gives it an edge for high-resolution streaming. This doesn’t make too much of a difference if you’re an iPhone user, though, and both headphones will satisfy with quick and stable connectivity.

Battery Life

There’s no difference between the PX8 and PX8 S2 in terms of battery life. Both headphones offer 30 hours of playtime and have fast charging.

Soundstage

Both headphones excel at creating an immersive soundstage for closed-back designs. The PX8 S2 expands on the original by offering greater headroom and tighter imaging, allowing instruments to be placed more precisely across the stereo field. The PX8 already impressed with its spacious presentation, but the S2 adds a layer of depth and precision that makes music feel more three-dimensional.

Low End

The bass response of the PX8 S2 is powerful and dynamic, with a rich, textured low end that adds energy without overwhelming the mix. At times, the texture can feel slightly artificial, but overall, the performance is punchy and engaging. The original PX8 also delivers a strong low end, though it is slightly less refined. Bass lovers will be happy with either model, but the S2 has the edge in control and detail.

Mids

The midrange on the PX8 S2 is warm and smooth, though vocals can occasionally feel recessed. Instrumental layering remains clear, but the S2 favors warmth over forwardness in this range. The PX8 offers a similar midrange signature, but the S2 adds more clarity and balance across the spectrum. While neither model pushes vocals aggressively forward, the S2’s presentation feels slightly more polished.

Highs

High frequencies are where both headphones shine. The PX8 S2 delivers crisp, transparent treble with excellent detail retrieval and just enough sparkle to keep things lively without introducing harshness. It’s smooth and non-fatiguing, making it suitable for extended listening. The original PX8 also excels in the highs, but the S2 introduces even greater resolution and air. Treble lovers will appreciate the refinement and precision that the upgrade provides.

Summary

The Bowers & Wilkins PX8 S2 is a stylish and refined evolution of the original PX8. With lighter earcups, more advanced Bluetooth connectivity, slightly better noise cancelling, and refined sound imaging, the S2 stands as the more capable headphone. The original PX8 still delivers a premium experience with luxurious materials, strong ANC, and excellent sound, but the S2 takes things a step further in almost every category.
