If you’re shopping for high-end planar magnetic headphones, Dan Clark Audio’s AEON series likely sits at the top of your list. The Noire X and AEON Noire XO are two closely related models that cater to audiophiles who crave precision tuning and signature Dan Clark comfort, but with different acoustic designs: closed-back versus open-back. Let’s compare the AEON Noire X and Noire XO to help you determine which headphone better suits your preferences, whether you’re after immersive isolation or an airy, more expansive listening experience.
What You Get
Both headphones are packed the same way, with the same materials provided. With the Noire XO and X, you’ll receive a 2m Dummer cable in your requested termination, and a soft shell zipper case.
Look & Feel
If you love the compact design of Dan Clack’s AEON series, then you won’t be disappointed by the Noire X and Noire XO. Both headphones offer a sleek black on black finish, with the only major difference being the open vs closed principle of the earcups. The earpads are the same Alcantara synthetic suede that significantly reduces heat. This ensures you experience the same amount of comfort from both headphones. While both Noires have a similar fit, the open-back allows for more breathable room, so there’s a better chance your ears won’t become fatigued over time.
Design
The Noire XO and X both use planar magnetic drivers that feature Dan Clark Audio’s Acoustic Metamaterial Tuning System(AMTS). They both have a clean output flow as long as you use a good DAC amp to power them with. My main companions for this comparison review were the iFi Valkyrie and the Chord Mojo 2.
Soundstage
When I first listened to the Noire XO, I couldn’t make out any big enhancements from the soundstage, which was very surprising. I A/B tested the open and closed Noire’s more, and the difference started to become clearer. The closed Noire X already had a fantastic soundstage, with a large wingspan and excellent imaging. It’s still one of the best closed-back soundstages on the market. The Noire XO takes that stage and expands it just enough to gain a new dimension without sacrificing the properties that make the closed-back version good. While the Noire XO doesn’t do anything monumental to its soundstage compared to the closed version, it adds just enough to make a difference. The sound is still intimate, but the headspace is more breathable.
Low End
Both Noire X’s have a bolstered low end that offers depth and clarity to the sound signature. They’re about the same in terms of general impact, but the closed Noire X has the benefit of providing more resonance. This allows for a more sustained rumble that vibrates throughout the mix. The Noire XO is a bit more concise with its bass, supplying a more dynamic bass and smoother timbre.
Mids
If you think you’ll get more out of the midrange from the Noire XO, you might be disappointed. Both headphones have the same dip in the mids that is only just noticeable if you’re looking for it. You still get good clarity and detail from both headphones, as well as individualized sound elements that feel roomy and breathable. The key difference between the two is the low-mids, which get a slight boost in the Noire XO. This adds a bit more warmth to the sound, and it also gives the mids more body.
Highs
With both headphones using Dan Clark Audio’s Acoustic Metamaterial Tuning System(AMTS), the high frequencies will be super clean and natural. This is where the Noire XO and X share a lot of the same qualities. They both contain crisp treble with plenty of shimmer for cymbals. The Noire XO is the one that comes off the most subtly compared to its closed-back counterpart, providing a softer strike on notes.
Summary
Both the Dan Clark AEON Noire X and Noire XO deliver premium sonic performance, detailed imaging, and world-class comfort, but they cater to slightly different listening environments. The Noire X, with its closed-back design, excels in providing deeper bass resonance and an isolated soundstage that’s ideal for focused listening or studio use. Meanwhile, the Noire XO opens up that soundstage just enough to offer greater air and dimensionality, making it a better choice for casual or at-home listening where openness enhances musicality. Regardless of your choice, both models reflect Dan Clark Audio’s relentless pursuit of acoustic refinement. Whether you lean toward open-back headphones for breathability or closed-back for immersive isolation, you can’t go wrong with either in the AEON Noire line.
