Look & Feel
FlipEars IEMs have had some extravagant designs, like the Legion and Aegis. Those earphones look like they were crafted by dwarves compared to the Zurq. However, there are ways that can work in the Zurq’s favor. Those IEMs looked spectacular, but then you realize you have to put them in your ear. The Zurq has a more favorable design in that way, while still conveying a striking appearance. With its gold flakes and glossy resin, the Zurq still feels like a statement when worn. There’s more of a mechanical design to the body compared to other FlipEars products, with its slightly seethrough shell revealing some of its interiors. Notably, it shows off the Zurq’s SoniXwoofers, which makes these IEMs look like serious pieces of tech compared to the competition.
These are still quite big shells, though, so do they feel comfortable to wear? My ears are rather large, but I think the cavity is shaped ergonomically enough to accommodate different ear sizes. Where the Zurq can feel really cumbersome, though, is with its spout. It’s the largest I’ve seen in a while, but I didn’t feel any significant fatigue while spending hours listening to them. Ear tip selection is key, though, and I don’t think the ones in the box do enough to make the initial insertion feel less awkward.
DesignÂ
I’ve already mentioned the Zurq’s SoniXwoofer drivers, but this is a tri-brid configuration that’s also equipped with 3 balanced armatures and 2 electrostatic drivers. This complex array of drivers is supported by a 5-way crossover system that helps organize the output of all these different drivers. This makes the Zurq a very efficient set of IEMs to drive, but it’s best to practice caution with gain levels when listening. Using a Fiio BTR17, I noticed quick jumps in level, even from the slightest increase in volume.
Soundstage
Being familiar with the Legion and Aegis, I was expecting a wide soundstage with the Zurq. That’s exactly what it offers, portraying an expansive stereo field that prioritizes accuracy and spaciousness. In terms of which way the Zurq leans, the imaging is more linear than you might be expecting, but the scope of the soundstage allows the sound to wrap around you for greater immersion. Instruments are individualized in the mix, but they are not holographic. Spatial positioning is strict and grounded, localizing instruments with precision while maintaining a level of movement. Your head still feels like it sits in the middle of everything, but the dimension of the sound is brought down to a traditional stereo environment. As a result, the Zurq has a very in-studio feel, communicating layers of sound concisely. Headspace might be more reserved, but the scale of the sound still appears true.
Low End
From the few FlipEars IEMs I’ve listened to, I think it’s safe to say that their sound signature favors the low end. There’s a consistent sub-bass vibration that provides a lot of heft without being muddy. It’s a tight and controlled rumble that establishes a strong foundation for the sound profile. There’s also tons of detail here, culminating in a smooth timbre that has real definition. Basslines have a groove to them, giving clear shape to notes, while bass sweeteners in electronic and dance tracks provide a suitable impact that keeps the tone gripping and energetic. The Zurq does this all while keeping the bass separate and balanced in the mix. It won’t shake you to the core, but expect some engaging depth from the Zurq’s low-end frequencies.
Mids
Everything that comes through the midrange appears even and natural in timbre. Layers of instruments are communicated articulately, providing good separation that allows for instruments to appear full in the mix. It’s a very realistic reproduction of sound, providing a natural surface of clarity that makes instruments pop. There’s great detail to be extracted from specific performances that come through with pristine clarity. It feels biting and sharp, almost to a fault, as the upper-mids can appear quite shouty at times. This usually happens when busy orchestral tracks start to reach a crescendo, or when a female vocalist starts to reach higher notes. The Zurq can handle these elements and shape them well, but the sound signature doesn’t shy away from harsher tones.
Highs
The highs have a good level of finesse to them, and while some areas can be bright, their presence is unmistakable. It’s strong in its detail, and its presentation is clean and precise. You don’t get a lot of height here, but the frequencies are propelled forward and cut through with a strong resolution. It’s not quite raw, but the tone is natural and clear. You get a tinge of sparkle that rings out, but it’s a more clinical response than you might be expecting.
Summary
The Zurq XXIV is quite the powerhouse. With a tight, tactile low end, articulate mids, and clean, detailed highs, this tri-brid in-ear monitor delivers a studio-like soundstage with immersive presence and precision. While the large nozzle and ear tip selection may be a hurdle for some users, the overall comfort and build quality remain solid. FlipEars has crafted an IEM that appeals to both the eyes and the ears, balancing sonic excitement with technical control. If you’re looking for a high-end IEM with striking looks and an expansive, accurate sound signature, the Zurq XXIV deserves a top spot on your shortlist.
