Soundlazer VR: Hanging Speaker For Only Your Ears

Sometimes we just want to listen to music out loud, especially for long periods of time without the use of headphones. This isn’t really possible without the possibility of bothering others with your music. Soundlazer is looking to clear that problem right up. They’ve created an overhead speaker that directs music straight to the listeners’ ears for full and rich sound, without disturbing others.

Soundlazer VR

The Soundlazer VR creates a spherical cloud of sound by way of it’s curved design. With the use of planar wave technology, sound waves are emitted through a number of tiny speakers in straight parallel wave patterns, which allow for very directional and ultra clear sound. Standard speakers are shaped to disperse sound in all directions.

The VR should be mounted two to four feet above the listener for them to hear the best quality audio. The sound reproduced is actually four times louder under the speaker. Upon moving three feet away, the sound drastically decreases (as displayed in Soundlazer’s promo). The speaker can also be used with ambient or white noise to create a barrier from between users and annoying office chatter and the like.

The Soundlazer VR reaches the full range stereo frequency response of 150 Hertz – 20,000 Hertz and is driven by a two channel, 15 W amplifier. It’s audio is said to be “comparable to many high end speaker systems except that the sound does not fill the room.” Moreover, it creates crisp, clear audio, although “due to the organic nature of the sound produced by the Soundlazer VR, lower frequency sound reproduction is not necessary for an enjoyable experience.”

For those in need of a smaller alternative (possibly for a desktop) the VR junior is also available. It uses the same planar wave technology to direct sound waves at the listener.

Both of these minimalist style speakers are wire-free and use Bluetooth technology to pair with computers, cellphones, and other smart devices.

The Soundlazer VR and VR Junior are currently selling for $209 and $169 on Kickstarter, respectively. The wireless speakers will ship worldwide in October.
