Audibility, Custom Fit Earbuds in 10 Minutes
The nearly 3-year old company just launched a Kickstarter to bring their custom hearable to life. Audibility was designed by Brian Carter, a recent University of Portland graduate student who has worn hearing-aids since he was four. Accustomed to personalized hearing aids, he found generic earbuds difficult to wear.
“I would go to wear them and it’s just that much more frustrating because I knew I could wear something comfortable in my ear all the time,” Carter tells The Oregonian. “And I’m certainly not the first person who’s complained about something like that.”
True!
The earbuds, which are equipped with an in-line mic and controller, are shipped with two types of molding material. When the wearer is ready to create their custom fit earpiece, they place the memory foam earbuds comfortably in their ear canal. They then mix the two molds together for about 45 seconds before placing it over their earbuds and outer ear. Let 10 minutes pass and then the personalized wearable is ready for studying, running, boxing, etc.
Operating off of 9 mm drivers on an impedance of 32 ohms, the tailored headphones reach a frequency response range between 20 Hertz – 20,000 Hertz. Pretty cool!
This campaign is also raising awareness about the lack of hearing aid availability to the 80 percent of 640 million people dealing with hearing loss. With every purchase of Audibility Customs, the Portland-based company will donate 10 percent of the proceeds to benefit Hear the World Foundation. This charity focuses on providing children with hearing loss an equal opportunity at improving their quality of life.
Audibility Customs will retail for $49, but backers receive an early-bird discount as low as $29 on Kickstarter. The crowdfunding campaign launched yesterday and will continue for 30 more days. As of now, Audibility has already sourced $7,950 of their $10,000 goal thanks to 135 backers.
Audibility Customs will ship in September 2016.
