Headband

The headband of the Audio Technica Solid Bass ATH-WS990BT is made of metal. On its underside is a memory foam cushion coated in soft perforated pleather. In addition to its soft cushion, the headphones are also comfortable because the don’t clamp the head super tightly. Additionally, they are very flexible and would easily fit folks with bigger heads than mine.

Earcups

The earcups of the Audio Technica Solid Bass ATH-WS990BT are pretty large and oval-shaped. Toward the bottom of the cups, you’ll find all the buttons and controls (on/off, volume, playback, noise cancelling, etc). The cups are plastic and swivel, rock and turn in their yolks. Additionally, they have a pretty sleek and snazzy look.

Earpads

The Audio Technica Solid Bass ATH-WS990BT has angled, memory foam earpads which are coated in the same soft pleather material as the headband. There is a lot of space in the middle of the pads for larger ears. Additionally, the pads are thick enough so the ear doesn’t touch the earcup. They are comfortable and accommodating.

Bluetooth

The headphones were easy to connect to my phone. Once I turned them on, they popped up in the Bluetooth device list on my phone immediately. I was most impressed by the strength of the Audio Technica Solid Bass ATH-WS990BT’s Bluetooth connection. I walked over 30 feet away and the headphones wouldn’t break up even when I didn’t have line of sight.

Noise Cancellation

The noise cancellation of the Audio Technica Solid Bass ATH-WS990BT is pretty light. It is not super intense at all. For those that like a mild noise cancellation, you’ll like it in these headphones. Additionally, a touch control on the bottom of the earcup toggles the noise cancellation on and off. Also, it can put the headphones into “hear through” mode, which amplifies the world around you using the same microphone used in the noise cancellation.

Sound – Audio Technica Solid Bass ATH-WS990BT Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones Review

Low Frequencies

As you might expect by the name of these headphones the Audio Technica Solid Bass ATH-WS990BT headphones are heavy on the low frequencies. This heaviness works really well for some genres, and not so well with others. Regardless, if you’re a basshead, these headphones will not disappoint. The low end is fun and energetic, and can add emotional impact especially in genres that use a lot of synthesized instruments like pop, hip-hop, and electronic music.

Mid Frequencies

The Audio Technica Solid Bass ATH-WS900BT headphones emphasize the high-mid frequencies as well. As a result, the high-mids feel balance nicely against the bumped low frequencies. Additionally, vocals and other high-mid rich instruments like horns and strings have nice detail. The low mids are emphasized as well but blur a little bit with the low frequencies. As a result of this boost, the midrange feels a little bit scooped in general so pianos and guitars get more of their energy from the low-mid than from detail in the midrange.

High Frequencies

Additionally, due to a boost which sounds like it is around 10 kHz or 11 kHz, cymbals and the vocal breath sound airy, clear and detailed.

Soundstage

The soundstage of the Audio Technica Solid Bass ATH-WS990BT has pretty awesome left-to right image considering these are noise cancelling headphones. Additionally, the sense of height with these headphones impressed me because it was actually pretty decent in comparison to others in the price range. The sense of depth of the headphones isn’t great but I was still impressed with the responsiveness of these cans.

Overview – Audio Technica Solid Bass ATH-WS990BT Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones Review

In conclusion, the Audio Technica Solid Bass ATH-WS990BT headphones are a really solid set of noise cancelling, wireless cans for the bassheads out there. The headphones are comfortable, the noise cancellation is mild, and the sound was good. It sounded the best to me with music with a lot of synthesized instruments like pop, hip-hop, and electronic.
