Esoteric has introduced the N-01XE, a new premium network DAC that brings several technologies from the flagship Grandioso N1 to the company’s prestigious 01 Series. Designed as the successor to the N-01XD SE, the N-01XE features Esoteric’s second-generation Master Sound Discrete DAC, its latest Network Engine G4, and an elaborate independent power-supply architecture.
The N-01XE reflects the core principles behind Esoteric’s 01 Series: substantial mechanical construction, proprietary discrete circuitry, extensive power-supply engineering, and meticulous Japanese manufacturing. According to Esoteric, these elements allow the component to deliver a natural, three-dimensional presentation while preserving the dynamics, energy, and texture of the original recording.
Master Sound Discrete DAC G2
At the center of the Esoteric N-01XE is the Master Sound Discrete DAC G2. This proprietary, FPGA-based, multi-level delta-sigma converter is designed and manufactured in-house using carefully selected discrete components. Rather than relying on a conventional integrated DAC chip, Esoteric developed the circuit to reproduce music with greater dynamic range, power, and immediacy. Its large-scale architecture uses 32 discrete elements per channel, with key components operating independently.
The DAC supports high-resolution playback up to 22.5MHz DSD and 768kHz PCM. Because DSD and PCM have different signal characteristics, Esoteric developed separate FPGA processing algorithms for each format. This allows the N-01XE to optimize its digital-to-analog conversion process according to the incoming signal. Ultra-precise MELF resistors and IDM-01 amplification elements are also incorporated into the design. Esoteric says this combination helps the N-01XE produce a vivid, highly dynamic sound with an organic tonal character and convincing sense of live presence.
A Refined Second-Generation Discrete DAC Design
The move to the G2 architecture introduces several changes intended to improve current delivery and reduce noise. Esoteric redesigned the high-power, low-noise flip-flop circuit that controls the resistor elements within the DAC’s digital section. Additional capacitors have also been positioned near those resistor elements. This revised layout is intended to provide more immediate current delivery while lowering the amount of noise introduced during the conversion process. Esoteric has also reconstructed the DAC’s power-supply paths. The FPGA and other digital circuits now use separate supply lines, while the hot and cold sides of the analog stage receive their own regulated power. By supplying each section independently, Esoteric aims to achieve greater signal purity and more precise channel performance.
Fully Dual-Mono DAC Architecture
Although the N-01XE is housed within a single stereo chassis, its internal DAC operates in a fully dual-mono configuration. The left and right channels receive independent power transformers, reducing interaction between channels and supporting improved stereo separation. The component contains five power transformers in total. Separate transformers are dedicated to the left-channel DAC, right-channel DAC, network engine, digital circuitry, and system microcontroller. Each section is supported by its own linear power source. This extensive isolation is designed to minimize electrical interference and provide the stable current required for smooth, natural, and analog-like playback.
Esoteric Network Engine G4 Adds Optical Connectivity
The N-01XE also introduces Esoteric’s fourth-generation Network Engine G4. Derived from technology used in the flagship Grandioso N1, the new streaming platform combines a powerful processor with increased RAM and an SFP port for optical network connections. A dedicated linear power supply keeps the network engine electrically independent from the component’s audio circuits. Individual parts of the network section are supplied through separate transformer windings, further limiting interference between systems. Instead of using a conventional switching power supply, Esoteric equips the network engine with a large toroidal transformer, custom capacitors, Schottky barrier diodes, and other oversized components. The company says this engineering contributes to a smoother, richer, and more detailed streaming presentation.
RJ45 and SFP Network Inputs
The Network Engine G4 includes a built-in network switch function and offers two network interfaces: a conventional RJ45 Ethernet connection and an SFP port. Connecting the N-01XE to a compatible network switch through an SFP module and fiber-optic cable can electrically isolate the player from network noise. This gives listeners another way to optimize streaming performance in a high-end audio system.
Users can also install a direct-attach copper cable in the SFP port. This option reduces the number of circuits in the signal path and provides a simpler wired connection between compatible network devices. The RJ45 and SFP interfaces can be used simultaneously, giving owners greater flexibility when integrating the N-01XE into different network configurations.
Premium Construction and Japanese Craftsmanship
Like the other products in Esoteric’s 01 Series, the N-01XE is built around a substantial chassis produced using multiple precision-machining techniques.
