Look & Feel
The Final Audio DX4000CL takes its design inspiration from the Sonarous line of headphones that haven’t been around for a while now. Final returns to this style of build with the DX4000CL. The DX4000CL is built with durability and long-term use in mind. Its housing is assembled without adhesive, instead using precision screws and O-rings to allow for repairability and modular servicing, reducing stress on components over time. The earcups and headband utilize 30 mm thick synthetic leather and memory-foam earpads that provide a secure seal and distribute pressure comfortably, even during extended listening sessions. Overall, the fit strikes a balance between firm clamping force for acoustic consistency and comfort suitable for long, focused listening sessions.
Design
At the core of the Final Audio DX4000CL is a newly developed 40mm dynamic driver featuring a Japanese paper-and-carbon composite diaphragm, engineered for low distortion, natural timbre, and fast transient response. Final also incorporates an internal rear diffuser structure to manage resonance and reduce internal reflections, helping the DX4000CL deliver a presentation that feels surprisingly spacious for a closed headphone.
Soundstage
In terms of spatial accuracy and localization, the Final DX4000CL has a wonderful display. The imaging is top-notch, communicating instruments that are anchored down into hyperspecific areas throughout the left and right channels. Their spread isn’t what’s impressive about it, though. While featuring great separation, the provided headspace isn’t even that big. All of the instruments are just very graceful and articulate with their placement throughout the mix. It comes across as natural and real, without feeling plain or linear. Immersion is easy to feel when the stereo image is as refined as it is on the DX400CL.
Nothing appears floaty, and it doesn’t give you that holographic feel that other headphones like to impress you with. It might not feature the largest scale of sound with inward depth and a headspace that wraps around you, but the level of precision the DX4000CL shows is enough to be fully entranced by.
Low End
The lows on the DX4000CL are very dynamic. They don’t take up a ton of the spotlight, but deliver when called for. Notes are individualized, acting as a foundational support system for the rest of the sound signature. Tonally, the bass has a natural flavor with a touch of warmth. There’s good energy to these frequencies, but their impact isn’t substantial. The DX4000CL can vary in terms of punch depending on how aggressive the low end of your selected track is. Mid-bass frequencies are a tad soft, but the sub-bass still comes through with satisfying rumble. Strummed bass notes are buzzing and clear, but bass textures from synths aren’t as detailed. The DX4000CL is more organic in its timbre and fares better with the low frequencies on real instruments.
Mids
In the midrange, the DX4000CL continues its warm and organic texture. These frequencies give each instrument a ton of breathing room, expressing fullness and tonal control throughout the sound signature. These mids don’t exactly have a very strong weight to them, but the sound elements are still clear and detailed enough to feel rounded. Everything is still articulated well with good resolution, even featuring a clear underline that makes some instruments pop. Vocals benefit the most from this, as they appear the most alive and front-facing compared to how the DX4000CL reproduces other sonic elements. They’re lively and expressive, exhibiting the richest details this frequency resposne has to offer.
Highs
The treble is very refined while also featuring specs of brightness to keep things interesting. Cymbals and bells have a slight shimmer, but it’s the tick that each instrument has that really characterizes these high frequencies. Sometimes the highs can show a lot of energy, but the tuning of the DX4000CL keeps everything tight. You get a sense of height and presence that feels very precise and clear. There’s a good definition without reaching beyond and making the highs feel too hot.
Summary
The Final Audio DX4000CL is not a headphone that relies on exaggerated staging or boosted frequency extremes to make an impression. Instead, it delivers a carefully balanced, natural sound signature defined by precise imaging, warm, organic mids, controlled low-end response, and refined treble extension. Its soundstage may not be the widest in its class, but its spatial accuracy and instrument placement feel deliberate and lifelike, making it especially engaging for focused listening sessions.
Combined with its modular, repairable construction, premium materials, and included 4.4mm silver-coated cable, the DX4000CL reflects Final Audio’s commitment to long-term usability and acoustic integrity. For audiophiles seeking a closed-back headphone that emphasizes realism, tonal cohesion, and technical precision over flashiness, the Final Audio DX4000CL delivers a thoughtfully engineered, musically satisfying experience.
