Look & Feel

The new S12 shares the same basic design as the previous versions but with a flashy black and gold finish. Its body is made from titanium alloy with a high-precision CNC-milled shell. Soundstage

The original S12 and S12 Pro had great soundstages for the price. They did well adhering to budget ChiFi sensibilities like width and impressive dimensionality. You get much of the same with the 2024 edition, and while I still find some of the imaging linear it retains a level of spaciousness that feels immersive. Its presentation mostly resides in your head, with hard-panned sound elements reaching the furthest outside. There’s great channel separation, and while individual sounds don’t have the same airiness to them, the S12 still does a great job communicating the spaces in between. It leaves a good amount of room for grander tracks to take shape, like lush ambient soundscapes or movie scores.

Low End 

I would describe the bass timbre of the S12 2024 edition to be quite clean. It’s a balanced sound signature that holds impressive dynamics and scale. However, you might not get the most direct impact from them. The S12 isn’t a chameleon though, as there’s a consistency to it that establishes a solid foundation. You can sense the sub-bass doing the work needed to elevate the response. In tracks where the bass doesn’t have much of a presence, the S12 scales back, but when called for it has the ability to be dominant and make a significant impression. If you’re looking for vibrant textures in your bass, I don’t think that’s the kind of tuning this new S12 has, but you still get clear details.

Mids

While the mids don’t have enough of a presence to feel totally lush, they retain a lot of exciting qualities that establish good midrange detail. Everything feels like it has enough room to breathe, even when the sound spectrum doesn’t quite take full advantage of that extra space. What this leads to though is audible artifacts being made clear. There isn’t much gain, or strike to these elements, but its smoothness creates a ton of musicality. The S12 2024 is able to capture colorful qualities in its midrange, heard mainly through acoustic instruments. There’s a transparency and delicateness to them, which is highly enjoyable. If there was a bit more weight behind the individual notes, the S12 2024 could be even better here.

Highs

You’re going to find parts of the S12 2024 a bit bright. There’s a clear treble emphasis that is strong but still kept under control. They showcase some nice clarity that gives sound elements an accented tail. It sizzles and tappers off, communicating a fair amount of distance and height. You’ll feel some heat with these highs, but it acts in a complementary way rather than a harmful one.
