Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) is the next big epidemic, according to health industry professionals. One in five teens in the U.S. have some form of hearing loss which is a 30 percent increase since the mid 1990’s. Another 1.1 billion people worldwide are at risk due to increase use of portable audio devices and tablets. The new “AP” line of headphones have ben fashioned to limit the volume to 85 decibels, which is the highest volume level before irreversible hearing loss occurs.

Puro will offer both an in-ear and on-ear option called the IEM200 and OEH200, respectively. The IEM200 model provides the user with various size ear tips for the best fit and noise isolation. Puro reports the tips should be able to block out up to 79 percent of ambient noise while the on-ear model blocks up to 80 percent. Although the headphones are safe, Puro advises they’ve been built with premium, studio-grade sound quality.

Puro Sounds Labs is working with School Districts and Audiologists nationwide to educate and provide parents and children with safe listening tools. Puro was inspired by the increase of audio devices and tablets that have become part of the school curriculum. Puro’s CEO Brett Lacey stated, “The increasing use of electronic devices as a method of delivering classroom instruction, is putting headphones on children’s ears more frequently and for longer durations. We already have a solution for everyday life, but we saw a gap in the market when it came to classrooms where kids are spending a significant amount of time.”

The IEM200 and OEH200 models retail at $29.99 and $39.99, respectively. Puro will give back a portion of sales to participating communities. The “AP” headphones are available now at Purosound.com.
