Meet SoundBrake 2.0, Headphone Alert System
According to a 2012 study published in the journal of Injury Prevention, the number of people in the US suffering serious injury or death while wearing music headphones rose by 300% from 2006 to 2012. Another US report cited, 116 people in the US wearing headphones either died or sustained serious injuries during 2004 to 2011. The number of people who died or were injured increased from 16 in 2004-05 to 47 in 2010-11. While those numbers aren’t very big, they are still quite startling.
SoundBrake is taking the next step in finding a means for keeping the music going while maintaining pedestrian, cyclist, and commuter safety. It does so by acting as the middle man between your headphones and your audio source. First, you’ll plug your headphones into SoundBrake and hit the Sample button which will measure the level of noise in your surrounding area. A proprietary algorithm computes a default alert level and four other alert levels increasing in volume. You are then able to select which alert level you would like to listen at.
Sundae Electronics promises the tiny unit retains your quality of music. SoundBrake runs for up to 50 hours and recharges via micro USB. The Early Bird Special on Kickstarter can get you your own SoundBrake 2.0 for $69. Orders will ship to backers in November 2017.
