iFi’s GO Link series receives a new entry in the GO Link 2 Max, serving to simultaneously evolve the GO Link 2 and the GO Link Max. Aiming for the ultra-portable market with greater accessibility and specs, the DAC/Amp boasts a sleeker build than the original Max with updated software beyond the standard Link 2. To those familiar with these previous models, are the changes enough to warrant an upgrade? Can the GO Link 2 Max compete in the ultra-portable DAC/Amp market on its own terms?

Build Design
At first glance, the only differences to pick out between the original GO Link 2 and the Max are the addition of a 4.4 output and adjusted logos. That’s because the only differences between the original and the Max are the addition of a 4.4 output and adjusted logos. I say this in jest, as the GO Link 2’s design has nothing broken to fix. The sleek trapezoid shell conveys maturity from the rounded original GO Link models. Build quality feels sturdy for such a light and small device. Ribbed sides prevent it from being too industrial, adding nice texture and subtle accents.
I’m a big fan of the silver-plated copper cable separating the USB-C port with the rest of the DAC/Amp. It feels dense and secure whilst having the flexibility required of something ultra-portable. If I had to nitpick, the “Hi-Res Audio” sticker slapped under the light is slightly distracting, but the matching gold metals used for the ports somewhat offset its jarring nature.
Audio Design
Pursuing its namesake, the GO Link 2 Max doubles the standard 2’s single ESS Sabre DAC. Designating a DAC chip to each audio channel pushes clarity and speed. The chips have been further improved upon with iFi’s Dynamic Range Enhancement, expanding the sound by six decibels and cutting distortion by over 50% compared to the original Go Link Max.
Compatibility with the “iFi Nexis” application opens Android devices to firmware updates, as well as different digital filter options for personal customization. It’s interesting to see such a simple DAC/Amp have any personalization at all, though exclusivity to Android might be disappointing for Apple users. That said, however, those interested in such an otherwise straightforward device could feel minimal curiosity in external functionality.

Sound Test
Using the GO Link 2 Max unveiled impressive polish and power for an ultra-portable DAC/amp. Starting with the Sivga Nightingale Pro, the Link 2 Max had massive headroom, reaching a satisfying volume at minuscule levels. Soundstage got a noticeable push outward and upward yet maintained the Nightingale Pro’s delicate precision.
Moving to the Meze 105 SILVA, I discovered similar improvements. While the SILVA is easy enough to drive that an amp might feel unnecessary, having the GO Link 2 Max comfortably pushed up the overall sound without compromising the SILVA’s vocal-forward identity. Placement felt improved with the added power, giving an already strong stage and even grander presence.
Finishing on the Beyerdynamic DT 700 Pro X solidified the sonic accents of the Link 2 Max. The 700 Pro X remains fast, wide, and precise with no artificial fluff to muddy the sound. Having amplifier support brings energy to the flatter studio signature to support an excitingly technical listening experience.
Summary
For a seamless boost to clarity and sound, the GO Link 2 Max is a tough new challenger to the price range. With dedicated channel DACs, seamless controls, and a tiny build, the DAC/Amp achieves a new standard of portability. Those craving sheer output power could find more in other DAC/Amps, but not without compromising the GO Link 2 Max’s compact versatility. In the landscape of ultra-portable devices with multiple output options, iFi’s latest is one of the greatest.
