DUNU is a company I hear about rarely. But, when I do hear about them, it is often with pleasure as a co-worker speaks about their experience with their earphones. Well, today I’ll compare them with one of the most popular brands out there to see how they perform by conducting a Sennheiser IE 80 S vs DUNU DN-2000J comparison review.

Design
Sennheiser IE 80 S
The IE 80 S has an hook-around-the-ear design and comes with removable hooks. This style has proven to agree with my weird ear shape, so I’m excited to see how it fits. I put the smallest ear-tips on the earphones, wrap the cable around the back of my ear and put the tips in my ears. The fit is secure and comfortable. The sound isolation is executed marvelously (according to Sennheiser’s site, it attenuates -26 dB). The earphones are made of plastic, so naturally they are light, but also maybe subject to damage if not taken care of properly. Additionally, the IE 80 S includes a 2-prong detachable cable.
DUNU DN-2000J
On the other hand, the DN-2000J earphones can hook around the ear or hang straight down. There are a number of different accessories included in the box that are meant to help make them secure, but because of my past with ear hooks, I reach for those and carefully slide them onto the cable. I notice immediately that even the smallest ear tips are too big for me. There is a Comply ear tip card inside the box so I know the IE 80 S ear tips (which also use Comply tips) will fit. I switch them onto the DJ-2000J and the fit is much better now. The DN-2000Js are comfortable and light, albeit a little heavier than the IE 80 S earphones. Their housings are made of metal as to protect the three drivers inside. Dual balanced armature drivers combine with a dynamic driver to the best sound possible. I’m excited to hear for myself.
But first, let’s see how the IE 80 S performs.
Sound
Sennheiser IE 80 S
The most interesting feature of the Sennheiser IE 80 S is its variable bass response. Since I’ve listened to and explored this feature on these earphones before, I’ll set it to my favorite setting which is at the third tick mark, just about halfway between the lowest and highest setting. As I start listening and flipping through a few genres, the bass feels clear and punchy. I also notice a boost somewhere around 4kHz and 5kHz, giving the higher frequencies in vocals a little bit of spice. The high frequencies are warm and smooth. They border on being too quiet, but I actually like where they sit. The low frequencies and the low-mids are dynamic, making them react in a cool way to orchestral music. They are also particularly nice for listening to hip-hop.
DUNU DN-2000J
The first thing I notice when I begin listening to the DN-2000J is the high frequency information. Wow! These headphones have a lot of air. The air, combined with its dynamic quickness, creates a spacious soundstage that sounds great, particularly with orchestral music or any recording benefiting from a good sounding room microphone. There is a boost around 6kHz and this boost tends to make the body of vocals seem quieter, although the air added to them gives them an interesting new energy. The low end is clear, but it is too light overall. This low-end deficiency makes hip-hop, rock, and reggae music fall flat for me. Darker sounding recordings feel nice with the high-end boost though.
Overview
Overall, I like the Sennheiser IE 80 S the most because it is a more versatile earphone. It is better with a wider variety of genres. The DUNU DN-2000J is a special earphone and it feels like it should be part of an array of earphones rather than a standalone earphone. If you are an audiophile who collects in-ears, the DN-2000J would be a great color to add to your palate. But, if you are someone looking for an everyday pair of earphones, I’d recommend the IE 80 S.
