FiiO has introduced the FT15, a new pair of planar magnetic over-ear headphones designed to combine large-scale driver technology with relatively accessible power requirements. Following the company’s award-winning FT5, the FT15 features a significantly thinner diaphragm, a proprietary diamond coating, 101mm planar drivers, and natural walnut earcups.
Priced at $499.99 in the United States, the FiiO FT15 also arrives with a balanced cable, multiple amplifier adapters, two sets of earpads, and a storage case. Its specifications position it as a versatile option for listeners who want to explore planar headphone performance without being tied exclusively to a powerful desktop amplifier.
Ultra-Thin 800nm Diaphragm With Diamond Coating
The central feature of the FiiO FT15 planar headphones is an ultra-thin diaphragm measuring just 800 nanometers. According to FiiO, this makes the diaphragm 86.7 percent thinner than the one used in the previous generation. Reducing the diaphragm’s mass is intended to improve its responsiveness, allowing it to start and stop more quickly as the audio signal changes. FiiO says this design supports precise and refined sound reproduction, helping the FT15 reveal subtle details within a recording.
To reinforce the thin diaphragm, FiiO applies its proprietary full-face diamond coating across the moving surface. The coating increases rigidity while retaining the diaphragm’s low mass. This balance of stiffness and speed is designed to produce more controlled movement and reduce unwanted deformation during playback.
Large 101mm Planar Drivers Aim for a Spacious Sound
The FiiO FT15 uses 101mm planar magnetic drivers with an effective radiating area of 6,443.5mm². The large surface area is designed to produce a broad, open presentation with a greater sense of scale and space. FiiO supports the drivers with a patented uniform magnetic-field system. Custom-contoured, high-strength magnets distribute force across the diaphragm more evenly, which the company says helps suppress diaphragm breakup and reduce distortion at its source.
The driver assembly also incorporates a precision electroplated voice coil manufactured with 28nm chip-grade technology. Its structure is designed to remain secure under vibration, supporting consistent performance and long-term durability. Together, the diaphragm, magnetic system and voice coil form the core of FiiO’s latest planar headphone platform.
Low-Impedance Design Expands Device Compatibility
Planar magnetic headphones can require substantial amplification, but FiiO has designed the FT15 to work with a broader selection of sources. Its 24-ohm impedance and 95dB/mW sensitivity should make it compatible with equipment ranging from portable USB DACs and digital audio players to CD players and dedicated desktop headphone amplifiers.
FiiO specifically points to compact products such as its QX13 USB DAC as potential pairings, while more elaborate desktop systems can use amplifiers such as the company’s flagship K19. This flexibility could make the FT15 suitable for both desk-based listening and more compact personal-audio setups. The included cable is made from 6N monocrystalline copper and undergoes cryogenic treatment. It terminates in a 4.4mm balanced connector, while supplied 6.35mm and four-pin XLR adapters provide additional compatibility with a variety of headphone amplifiers.
Walnut Earcups and a Carbon-Fiber Headband
FiiO gives the FT15 a natural finish with earcups made from North American FAS-grade black walnut. Because every piece of wood has a distinct grain pattern, each pair will have a subtly individual appearance. A carbon-fiber headband helps limit the overall weight to 425 grams. Although the FT15 remains substantial, FiiO says its weight-reduction measures are intended to improve comfort during longer listening sessions. The package includes two sets of earpads, allowing users to adjust the headphone’s fit and presentation. A dedicated storage case is also supplied to protect the FT15 when it is not in use.
The FiiO FT15 planar magnetic headphones are available now for $499.99. You can find them on Fiio’s website and soon from Audio46.
