iFi Audio has announced the iCAN PHANTOM 1.5, an updated version of its reference-class flagship headphone amplifier. Designed as an all-in-one solution for serious headphone enthusiasts, the new model can accommodate everything from sensitive in-ear monitors to demanding planar magnetic and electrostatic headphones. Rather than completely replacing the original design, the iCAN PHANTOM 1.5 introduces a collection of practical and performance-focused refinements. These include expanded gain settings, stronger IEMatch attenuation, a new VU meter, revised physical controls, and additional features within iFi’s Nexis control app.
Solid-State, Tube, and Tube+ Amplification
At the center of the iFi iCAN PHANTOM 1.5 are two separate, switchable Class A input stages. Listeners can choose between a discrete solid-state circuit and an all-valve stage built around matched General Electric 5670 tubes. A third Tube+ mode reduces loop gain and negative feedback while emphasizing harmonics associated with a warmer presentation. This effectively gives the amplifier three distinct sound profiles:
- Solid-State: Prioritizes speed, clarity, and immediacy
- Tube: Offers a smoother and more fluid presentation
- Tube+: Adds greater warmth and tonal saturation
This flexibility allows users to adjust the amplifier’s character according to the connected headphones, source material, or personal listening preferences.
Expanded Gain and IEMatch Settings
The iCAN PHANTOM 1.5 offers three gain settings of 0dB, 12dB, and 24dB. This expands the maximum gain from the original model’s 18dB setting, providing additional headroom for difficult-to-drive planar magnetic and electrostatic headphones. For sensitive earphones, iFi has also enhanced its IEMatch attenuation system. The updated amplifier provides up to 12dB of attenuation through its single-ended connections and up to 24dB through its balanced outputs. These settings are intended to give users finer volume control while reducing unwanted noise when listening with high-sensitivity IEMs.
Integrated Support for Electrostatic Headphones
Electrostatic headphone owners typically need a dedicated energizer in addition to a conventional amplifier. The iCAN PHANTOM 1.5 incorporates iFi’s iESL energizer technology directly into its chassis, eliminating the need for a separate component. The integrated system can deliver up to 640V for compatible electrostatic headphones. Combined with its conventional headphone outputs and adjustable gain structure, this makes the PHANTOM 1.5 a potential single-amplifier solution for collectors who own several different headphone types.
XBass and XSpace Sound Adjustment
The iFi iCAN PHANTOM 1.5 includes the company’s analog XBass and XSpace processing circuits. Its three-step XBass control allows listeners to increase low-frequency weight without relying on software-based equalization.
XSpace is designed to widen the perceived soundstage and create a more spacious presentation. Separate processing matrices are included for headphone and speaker applications, allowing the feature to operate differently depending on how the amplifier is being used.
New VU Meter and Redesigned Interface
One of the most visible changes is the addition of a VU meter display, which provides real-time level monitoring from the front panel. The user interface has also been redesigned to match the iDSD PHANTOM, creating a more consistent experience across iFi’s flagship product range.
The volume potentiometer now incorporates buffered pads for a smoother and more damped rotational feel. An anti-fingerprint coating has also been applied to the glass top and display to help maintain the amplifier’s appearance during everyday use. Underneath these updates, the new model retains the original iCAN PHANTOM’s True Differential Balanced PureWavePRO circuit design and capacitive power-supply system.
Expanded Nexis App Features
iFi has extended the iCAN PHANTOM 1.5’s connected functionality through its Nexis app. New options include product renaming, a reset control, and real-time monitoring of tube health. These features join the app’s existing remote controls, system diagnostics, and over-the-air firmware updates. Tube-health monitoring could be particularly useful for long-term ownership, helping users track the condition of the amplifier’s matched GE 5670 valves.
A Flagship Amplifier Designed for Headphone Collections
The iFi iCAN PHANTOM 1.5 is aimed at enthusiasts who would otherwise require multiple amplifiers for IEMs, dynamic headphones, planar magnetics, and electrostatic models. Its combination of solid-state and tube amplification, integrated electrostatic energizer technology, adjustable gain, IEMatch attenuation, and analog sound processing is intended to consolidate those capabilities into one component.
For owners of the original iCAN PHANTOM, the 1.5 revision focuses primarily on improved operation, system matching, and long-term usability. For listeners building a diverse headphone collection, it presents a flagship platform designed to accommodate both current equipment and future upgrades.
