Look & Feel

Kiwi Ears is among the lineup of chifi brands that like having flashy shell designs. The KE4 sports a 3D printed shell with medical-grade resin to form a more minimalist design compared to the brand’s other sparkly options. Instead, you are given a silver faceplate that is aesthetically pleasing on its own. It’s a great look that keeps things simple but elegant. In terms of fit, the KE4’s shell is a bit big but still very comfortable.

Design

The Kiwi Ears KE4 utilizes a hybrid driver configuration made up of two 10mm dynamic drivers and two balanced armatures. With its 3.5mm termination and low impedance, you should be able to drive them from a simple DAC dongle. For this review, I paired the KE4 to an iFi Go Link.

Soundstage

While the KE4 isn’t the widest soundstage I’ve heard, it provides plenty of space for tracks to display their imaging. The instruments show general accuracy with a clear balance between the left and right channels. Everything stacks on top of each other with plenty of separation, as each layer is individualized in a serviceable way. It really opens up the more you listen to it, expanding its wingspan significantly at times, especially when sounds play that hard panned hard left and right. You get slight depth from vocals that hover just above you, while the rest of the response communicates a stereo field on the edge of being holographic.

Low End

I think most people will be happy with this bass response, as it provides plenty of body to the frequency response. The tone is immediately gripping, with thumpy, solid grooves that extract tons of weight and energy from notes. It establishes an underlying foundation of rumble that isn’t incredibly deep but does enough to make an impact. Expect some good punch and bloom from the KE4.

Mids

The KE4 keeps up the energy in the midrange, showcasing surprising definition and clarity. They supply warmth that adds a lot of solidity to instruments, as well as characterizing the tone with a clear shape. There’s a liveliness to the frequencies that propel them forward, all while keeping good balance and separation that individualizes all the sounds accurately. It’s the range that shows off the most dimension from the sound signature, feeling open and roomy.

Highs

Most of the treble is reserved, but it still maintains a solid presence in the mix. They never call too much attention to themselves with brightness, but they have an airy tone that is satisfying enough for cymbals and bells. It’s an easily consumable response that doesn’t bother anyone, but if you’re looking for high frequencies with more technical ability, the KE4 won’t provide that.

Summary

All in all, the Kiwi Ears KE4 earbuds give you a pretty awesome combo of style, solid build, and good sound. They’ve got clear imaging, warm mids, and punchy bass that work well across different genres. Plus, they’re portable and come with everything you need to get going. If you’re after a set of in-ear monitors that sound great without costing a fortune, the KE4 is worth checking out.
