2024 was a great year for true wireless earbuds. With a variety of options from a slate of different brands, there was truly a little something for everybody. In this article, we’ll break down five of our favorite earbuds of the year and help you decide which are the best TWS earbuds of 2024.
Under $200
Sony LinkBuds Fit ($199.99)
Sony released a new, more-budget friendly entry into the true wireless space this year. In the LinkBuds Fit, the revered company offers some premium features at a more approachable price point than the flagship WF-1000XM5.
Most notably, this iteration of the LinkBuds is particularly ergonomic. Shaped like small pods, they use a silicone wingfin to maintain the tiny earbud’s fit in the ear. They come in black and white versions, and their case offers a glossy and luxurious finish.
The star of the show is really the noise isolation. In this price range, Sony offers some of the best noise isolation of any competing earbud. It also has advanced features like 360 Reality Audio which you can control through Sony’s new Sound Connect app. The LinkBuds Fit also offers great Bluetooth codecs, with LDAC leading the way, and its battery life is solid for the price.
Using an 8mm dynamic X driver, it has a solid sound output, with strong bass and an overall enjoyable v-shaped sound signature. The LinkBuds Fit are perfect TWS earbuds for someone who wants a taste of Sony’s premium features and sound quality at a more affordable price.
Under $300
Sennheiser Momentum TWS 4 ($299.95)
Sennheiser released their new Momentum TWS 4 early this year, and it stayed on our list of top wireless in-ears the whole way through. This earbud offers some of the best sound in this price range and boasts some top tier features too.
Coming in Black Graphite, Black Copper, and Metallic Silver, the Momentum TWS 4 ultimately doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel in terms of design. Still, they look good and feel good in the ears with an ergonomic shape and included wingfins. And with an eye for detail, Sennheiser allows you to test your seal through the companion app.
While the esteemed audio manufacturer didn’t change the TrueResponse dynamic driver, the sound is upgraded through the earbud’s tuning, solid ANC performance and Bluetooth capabilities. When it was released back in February, it was one of the first TWS earbuds I tried with Bluetooth 5.4 capabilities, meaning if you have a compatible device, these can do AptX Lossless and Auracast. The earbuds also offer an improvement in battery performance.
At $299.95, the Momentum TWS 4 is one of the best sounding and most feature rich TWS earbuds you can get under $300.
JBL Tour Pro 3 ($299.95)
Towards the end of the year, JBL made a late entry into the TWS space with the Tour Pro 3. It upgraded the user and listener experience in several ways, including better Bluetooth capabilities and an improved feature set.
The first upgrade you’ll notice is in the bigger screen that displays battery life and notifications among other things.
Unlike the previous two true wireless earbuds, the Tour Pro 3 offers a hybrid driver configuration with one dynamic and one BA driver. It has solid ANC and even has a spatial audio setting. They’re also highly customizable from within the accompanying app.
They also upgrade JBL’s Bluetooth compatibility jumping up to version 5.3 with LE Audio and Auracast and compatible with codecs up to LDAC. Battery life is really good with 11 hours of playback which goes up to 44 hours when used with the case.
Overall the Tour Pro 3 is a feature rich offering with a laid back harman targeted sound and would be great for someone who wants that onboard screen for controls and a nice v-shaped sound to their TWS earbuds.
Under $400
Bowers & Wilkins Pi8 ($399)
Bowers & Wilkins has long provided great wireless products in the more luxury price tier under $400. With the Pi8, the company looked to improve sound and noise-cancelling while upgrading the featureset.
With a redesigned shell and stylish colors, it’s a great looking and fitting set of true wireless earbuds. They use new carbon cone driver units, which we found to significantly upgrade the sound quality of the Pi series. The sound is a bit more mature and linear than some of the earlier models we recommended, and overall is geared towards audiophiles in its features.
The app lets you customize the on-board touch sensitive controls and the device runs on Bluetooth 5.4, with access to AptX Lossless as well. Its noise cancelling capabilities are quite good too. Battery life is solid too with about 6.5 hours from one charge and up to 13.5 more hours when used with the case.
We found the sound of the Pi8 to impress with a balanced and relaxed sound with textured bass, detailed mids, and a delicate top end. Even at the more premium price point, the Pi8 packs a great value for listeners who want to step up their TWS earbuds game.
Under $500
Noble Audio FoKus Rex5 ($449)
Finally, at the top of the price range, we really loved the new Rex5 from Noble Audio. We loved its visually distinct design, unique functionality, and impressive sound, and that makes it worth every penny for the audiophile who wants a set of wireless earphones for the road.
With a bold green look, the Rex5 looks to stand out from the crowd, and that it does. While they are on the larger side, they still fit great and have a good seal. Their size is due in part to the 5-driver design, which features dynamic, planar magnetic, and BA technology. But my favorite part of the Rex5 is its collaboration with Audiodo, which allows for custom eq based on a listening test available in app. With it, you can tailor the sound to your exact tastes and get a completely unique and high quality listening experience.
But the features don’t stop there. Using Bluetooth 5.4, the earbud offers LDAC and AptX adaptive among other codecs, though it does not support AptX Lossless. Its battery life without the case is just 5-7 hours, but there’s an additional 40 hours of life available when you use it with the case.
The sound is neutral and refined, offering chameleon-like bass, detailed and natural mids, and a relaxed and sophisticated top end. If you’re looking for a true audiophile-worthy set of TWS earbuds, this might be your best option.
Final Thoughts
Looking back at all these great TWS earbuds, I can’t help but look forward to what’s next in wireless audio. In the meantime, the earbuds listed above represent some of the best true wireless earbuds of 2024.
