Making their debut in the on-ear headphones market, Moshi’s new Avanti headphones are quite impressive and affordable. With a $200 price tag consumers can expect a pair of great sounding and looking headphones.
The good looks shouldn’t come as a surprise since Moshi’s made their mark fashioning affordable, yet unique accessories for portable devices. Avanti’s sleek chassis is framed by a stainless steel headband with sliding extenders. The modern, futuristic look is accented by soft leatherette earcups, available in burgundy and beige, reminiscent of the type of material you’d find on a really nice travel purse or couch!
The supra-aural earcups are angled to provide a decent amount of passive sound isolation and a more comfortable feel on the ears. The headband is also padded with the same soft material for a lightweight, relaxed feeling on the head. I’ve been able to wear Avanti all day at my desk without feeling any discomfort. Although, there were a few moments I stopped to let my ears breathe because they began to feel a bit hot – no other complaints though. P.S. I wear glasses and found the headphones to be surprisingly comfortable even after three hours or so.
The frame is also collapsible – with the extenders able to rotate and lock along the inside of the headband. In this position the headset easily fits into the hard grade carry case that is lined with fabric.
The detachable cables lock into both sides of the earcups. Of course, Moshi made sure even the earcup outputs and jacks are just as attractive as the rest of the frame – boasting the same stainless steel finish  as the headband as well as a red accent on the right connector. The cable features an in-line mic and controller. My only vice is that the controller cannot adjust the volume, it does however pause/play music, skip between tracks, queue Siri, and take/end calls. If this cable can in fact adjust the volume someone tell me!
Sound-wise, Avanti astounds. I was surprised by the natural and overall clarity of these headphones. Lows are balanced and pack a little punch. Bass is present. It isn’t over-bearing or weighty in that you lose your mids and highs. Bass heads may plead for a little bit more oomph, but I think the headphones dish enough for those who want a neutral sounding pair of cans. The mids are detailed with a life-like presence when it comes to instrumentation. Synths, vocals, and anything else leaning towards the high end are shimmery, lush, and bright. Music with instrumentation like classical, jazz, and acoustics sound really great. Indie pop-rockers and the like can enjoy the honest tonality of synthesizers within alt-pop. Although, the bass is not super strong, I think Hip-Hop and EDM lovers can still appreciate the balanced bass line on these headphones. For those who want the specs, these headphones reach a frequency response range between 15 – 22,000 Hertz using 40 mm drivers on an impedance of 32 ohms.
