New Release: Sennheiser PXC 550

Look out Bose Quiet Comfort 35, there is a new wireless, noise cancelling headphone in town and it’s got fancy smart controls. Meet Sennheiser PXC 550.

New Release: Sennheiser PXC 550

These headphones are built to be a traveler’s best friend – loaded with features favorable for anyone who is on an airplane often. First off, the most impressive feature is Sennheiser’s promise of a 30 hour battery life while in wireless mode with active noise cancelling. That is incredible! The ear cups feature touch sensitive track pads so users can seamlessly control their music, take calls, and adjust the volume. While paired with a companion app called CapTune, users are able to further customize their preferences.

The PXC 550 uses Near Field Communication (NFC) to engage with smart devices in wireless mode. Of course, a cable with an in-line mic and controller is included.

Moreover, the entire frame is collapsible. When the headphones are folded they are powered off, but when they are unfolded, the headphones power back on. Taking it one step further, the PXC 550 pauses music playback when removed from the head and resume when placed back on. A built-in limiter monitors peak levels so the headphones are never too loud. Sennheiser uses the example of pairing the PXC 550 with in-flight entertainment systems. They explain the headphones will automatically drop the volume if the voice over the loudspeaker comes through the headphones too loudly.

The overall build of the frame is said to be “one of the most lightweight headsets in the industry,” according to Sennheiser. They measured hundreds of ears – taking into account the overall size of the headset, the special shape of the ear pads, and the headband’s architecture – to create the most comfortable headset for all users.

For those interested in the specs, the PXC 550 reaches a frequency response range between 17 – 23,000 Hertz and runs on an impedance of 46 ohms. Sennheiser PXC 550 Wireless headphones will be available for $399 later this month.
