Spotify has changed a lot about its platform in the past few years, but it’s been missing one key feature that other streamers have. Hi-Res music streaming has become the norm for platforms like Apple Music, Tidal, and Amazon Music, leaving Spotify without a major ingredient for modern listening. Ironically, it was Spotify who was going to beat its major competitor, Apple Music, to the Hi-Res streaming game. However, since its initial reveal back in February 2021, Spotify has yet to start streaming in lossless formats, and Apple easily beat them to it just a few months later. Since then, it seems like Spotify has been giving yearly updates on their hi-fi tier that never end in an official release.
As of writing this article, Spotify is teasing its “Music Pro” add-on that might give us a clue on where the streamer might be headed with their lossless tier. While I’m not holding out hope that this could lead to an imminent release of Spotify Hi-Fi, Music Pro at least builds a blueprint. Lossless streaming isn’t specifically mentioned, it can pave the way for it in the future by offering additional content. If Spotify were ever to launch lossless streaming, this would allow them to do it without much fanfare. This will leave only the nerds like myself to focus on it, while Spotify can still cater to their core users who might not care for hi-res streaming but will spend an additional cost on special features.
Not much great press has followed Spotify in recent years due to a lack of proper artist compensation, and the most recent controversy of generative AI content on the platform. Spotify not offering hi-res streaming is probably not important enough to get them into artists’ good graces. At the end of the day though, Spotify is still the most popular music streaming service. Hi-res audio might satisfy some, but those who have been waiting for it have most likely switched to other streamers already. The cost-effective options for lossless audio streaming are easily accessible. Even with Spotify’s shotty reputation, its social aspects are what drive people to the platform.
