Look & Feel
If you’re not familiar with Status’ true wireless earphones, they have a unique square-shaped design that acts as their stem. Since this is the GoldenSound edition of the Pro X, the bottom portion of the stem is finished in gold against a matte black pattern. Gold and black always look great, so these earphones look particularly snazzy in a classy way. The main nozzle piece that actually goes in your ear has a small oval-shaped housing that fits just right.
The material is smooth, and the spout never feels intrusive at all. In fact, the GoldenSound Pro X is surprisingly small in general, so much so that how they appear on the box might mislead you into thinking they’re bigger than they are. Overall, these earbuds are very comfortable, with an incredibly stable fit. They don’t hang off your ears; they hold firm in place like a strong set of sports earbuds.
Design & Functionality
The Pro X GoldenSound uses a hybrid triple-driver configuration in each earbud, combining a large 12mm dynamic driver with two Knowles balanced-armature drivers. The dynamic driver handles the low frequencies, delivering deep bass with greater weight and control, while the dual balanced armatures reproduce vocals and high-frequency details with added clarity and precision. GoldenSound contributed the research, tuning, and final voicing, giving the system a more natural, balanced, and lifelike presentation. Noise-canceling helps with this, and the Pro X GoldenSound has surprisingly good ANC. Top-end noise barely breaks through, and when music is playing, most of the environment is basically muted. Soundstage
With all of the GoldenSound Pro X’s EQ settings, the soundstage stays pretty much the same no matter what. This works out great for a true wireless earphone that’s more audiophile-centric, as the changes in timbre never affect the way spatial imaging is presented. You wouldn’t want it to, because the GoldenSound Pro X has a great soundstage for a true wireless earphone. The level of spatial precision and accuracy it displays shoots way beyond its price point, rivaling similar audiophile true wireless products like the Noble Audio FoKus Prestige Encore.
It’s a wide sound that spreads out past any perceived barriers for a more natural stereo environment. Sounds occurring in the left and right channels have a distinct identity that results in a very organized soundstage that never appears disjointed. Instruments are layered with good separation between them, placing your head as the only thing that is directly in the middle of the mix. This allows the soundstage to feel like it’s engulfing your head, even with a more standard stereo reference. The imaging isn’t exactly tall and scaled, but instruments are localized well enough to give the soundstage a sense of realism.
Low End
In terms of EQ, the best bass you’re going to get out of the GoldenSound Pro X is with GoldenSound’s custom tuning, or Status’s signature setting that you can control yourself. The GoldenSound tuning is the whole point of the new Pro X sound signature, but it’s not customizable. So, if you want the most bass possible with these earphones, then Status’ signature profile is your best bet. It gives you a neutral tone that you can increase for more sub-bass rumble, but no matter how much you adjust EQ, there’s usually something you need to sacrifice in terms of overall clarity.
The GoldenSound setting gives you a more refined low-end signature, with more finesse in physical bass notes. If you’re looking for something that’s more like most consumer true wireless earphones, use the Status custom EQ and boost to your heart’s content. However, if you’re looking for something more natural, GoldenSound’s tuning is the right move. This profile gives the bass a lot more depth, bringing out the sub-bass but with more subtle details. You get more of a throaty presentation that lets you feel the frequencies crawl around. It’s a grounded resposne with more structure. It might not punch as hard as other true wireless earphones, but this is still one of the more dynamic low ends you can find on a Bluetooth product.
Mids
The GoldenSound Pro X has one of the meatiest midrange sound profiles you can hear on true wireless earphones. Like the lows, the GoldenSound EQ setting is going to offer the most naturalistic timbre, but the other sound signatures are worth comparing. Sticking with GoldenSound’s profile, though, the midrange does a good job communicating sound elements with room and tonal clarity. They have a defined resolution that has low-mid warmth and upper-mid crispness. Nothing feels hollowed out in the fundamental frequencies, but transients do appear smoothed over. This gives the midrange good texture, but if you want to hear your instruments really pop, you may want to use Status’ “audiophile” setting. This will boost that fundamental range that you can make adjustments to yourself, but it will add a clearer strike to notes.
String plucks are more concise, but that low-mid warmth stays intact. You can also use the “Knowles” setting for even more naturalistic attack. The one setting I haven’t talked about is “vocal enhance,” which is designed to do exactly as it says. Vocals get a pretty aggressive push forward in the mix, revealing more accentuated voice tones that take more advantage of mid-treble frequencies. This whole area gets elevated and makes for a solidly underlined vocal tone.
Highs
If you like sibilant, crisp treble, stick with the vocal enhance or Knowles tunings. The Knowles tuning is especially bright, but not in a harsh way. It just has a steep shelf on it that adds some nice air to the frequencies. While it can be a bit shouty, this is the most high-end presence you’re going to get from the Pro X GoldenSound. The sound has more height, sizzle, and overall clarity compared to the other settings. GoldenSound’s treble has a clear mid-treble, then smooths itself out and dips down. You still get clicky hi-hats, but the tail is dulled and rolled off for a more digestible sound signature. You still get a bit of height, but the tone is definitely thinned.
