Drawing from the natural and rich sound of acoustic instruments, Timber Audio is producing on-ear headphones with wooden cups. Their debut model is called Prelude and it consists of three versions – all soliciting different types of sound based on the wood used to make their respective earcups.

Maple is a very hard and dense wood with a slightly brighter sound. The Maple Preludes will emphasize the mid-range and have excellent definition. Red Cedar generally has a quick response, that is warm and lush in sound, so the sound will be a bit darker with more emphasis on lows. Walnut is a very natural sounding wood with a good range from lows to highs, so this on-ear headphone will lean more towards a bright top end and present mids. All of these rich tones will be achieved across a frequency range of 20 – 20,000 Hertz on 40 mm drivers. The impedance of the Prelude is 32 ohms.

The headband is made of aircraft grade aluminum and spring steel while the ear cushions are made from protein leather and memory foam. This same blend pads the top of the headband for comfortable extended wear.

Looking to make these headphones hassle-free, they have been made with wireless capabilities such as Bluetooth connectivity and FM radio connectivity. Prelude is said to run for 12 hours off of one charge of the 600mAh Lithium-ion Polymer battery. The headphones also have a built in micro SD card reader which I’m assuming is to store music on the phone if you’d like to go cell phone free.

Prelude comes with a braided auxiliary cable equipped with a three button remote controller. The charger and accompanying USB are also attached to braided cables so they should all be tangle-free. A hard shell carrying case is also included with a purchase of Prelude.

Timber Audio hopes to raise $55,000 in funding via their Kickstarter campaign launching June 6. The Timber Audio wooden headphones will be up to 50 percent off of the regular retail price of $198 for the first few backers!
